Mastering Adobe Illustrator Align Methods

When I was learning Adobe Illustration, the align method confused me a lot, because it’s quite different from align system in Adobe Photoshop. Actually, Adobe Illustrator align method is more powerful than Adobe Photoshop. In this article I will show you how to use it for your advantage.

Align in control bar and palette window

Aligning objects in Adobe Illustrator can be controlled via Option bar or Align Palette, both have the same purpose and options. The difference is, Option Bar only available if you select two or more objects.

Adobe Illustrator Align system

3 method of alignment

There are 3 align methods to choose. You can toggle between these align method every time you want to align objects. For this tutorial I will only use Horizontal Align Center method. The other methods will work basically the same.

To illustrate each align method, I will show you the result of each align method. Below is the original objects location before alignment.

Object original postion

1. Align to selection

Align to Selection works by aligning based on both selected object. With this method, both objects will move. Because I’m using Horizontal Align Center, both objects moved into new positions exact in the middle their previous positions. I think this method impractical if you working on something that need precision positioning. I rarely use this method.

Result with align to selection

2. Align to Key Object

Most Adobe Illustrator’s beginner users doesn’t know what Key Object is. Key Object is what makes Align system in Adobe Illustrator is better than Photoshop’s. I think this is the best align method option in Adobe Illustrator. When you select two or more objects, click one of them to make it as Key Object. When you align it, the others object will follow the Key Object. In image below, the Key Object is the orange square. Very handy dandy.

Result with Align to key object

3. Align to Artboard

Artboard is basically the canvas or document area. With Align to Artboard method, we can align the object to Artboard. Like you can see in image below, using Horizontal Align Center method will automatically align all objects on the very center of Artboard. This method is not my favorite, but it’s very useful.

Result with align to artboard

So that are three align options in Adobe Illustrator. All are useful depend on how to you use it.

How To Draw an Easter Egg Bunny

Since Easter will come really soon, In this tutorial we will guide you step by step how to make an easter egg bunny using Adobe Illustrator. We hope you enjoy it.

Step 1. Creating base egg shape

creating easter bunny

creating easter bunny

Make a New Document, with minimal 5 inch width and 7 inch height, and RGB color mode. First create a circle by using Ellipse Tool, with the size W=2.7 inch, and H=3.5 inch, place it on the center of canvas by using Horizontal Align Center on Align Panel. add a color with Gradient Tool and remove the outline, change the color on gradient slider swatches with the composition: light color(R 126, G 205, B 237), mid color (R 115, G 166, B 255), and dark color (R 69, G 122, B 224) please refer to the example below for radial gradient position, make sure the highlight is on the top.

creating easter bunny

Use Direct Selection tool and select the nodes on the side of the shape and drag it down, until the shape is egg-like.

creat easter bunny

Create a circle with W= 2 inch and H= 2.3 inch, align it on the center of the canvas and put it on the little below of previous shape, fill it by using radial gradient tool with light color (R 212, G 247, B 255) and darker color (R 125, G 204, B 237).

creating easter bunnySelect the base body, copy and paste in the front. select both of the body shape and the circle, then choose intersect on Pathfinder panel.

creating easter bunny

Now we will create the highlight, copy the main base body shape and paste in the front, and then go to Object>arrange>Bring to front on menu bar. scale it into smaller size and place it on the upper part of the main body, edit the gradation by clicking reverse gradient and decrease the opacity of the brightest color into zero. Change the layer style on Transparency panel into screen. Select all the object and group it.

creating easter bunny

Then, we will create an egg crack, by using Pen tool with same gradation color of egg base body, remove the outline and create attractive zigzag shape. Duplicate it with Selective tool, press alt and drag down. Change the fill color into solid color (R 176,G 235, B 237). group them and now we have an egg crack.

Step 2 Creating Character face

The character face consist of eyes, nose and mouth, and easy to make. Let’s start with the eyes.

creating easter bunnyCreate a circle with W= 0.2 inch H= 0.2 inch size, fill it with linear gradient, light color (R: 105, G:97, B:105) and darker color (R 0, G 0, B 0), and then create circle with solid white fill color, and the size W=0.07 inch H=0,07 inch on upper of previous shape as a highlight. create another circle with W= 0.3 inch and H= 0.3 inch, with same fill color as the main base body, go to Arrange>send to back. select all and duplicate it by alt+drag to the right about 2.6 inch. drag the outermost circle of eyes copy, until it look like the reflection of previous eye.

create easter bunny

Nose is created by making a circle with W= 0.8 inch and H= 0.085 inch, and solid grey fill color (R 35, G 31, B 32), select the side nodes in the circle, and drag it up, until the shape is like upside down triangle. Make oval shape with W= 0.16 inch H= 0.09 Inch with light gray fill color (R 167, G 167, B 168). Copy the base shape, and select it along with the light gray shape on the top and select intersect on Path finder panel, and put it little bit lower. select all of them and group, place the nose as the example below.

create easter bunny

The next steps are mouth, the mouth consists of basic shape, teeth, and tongue. as the basic shape, create a circle with W= 0.9 inch and H= 0.9 inch with dark red radial gradation color, with the composition of dark color ( R 133, G 18, B 28) and light color (R 190, G 30, B 45). make a rectangle with any shape that intersects with the circle, select Minus Front (Subtract) on Pathfinder panel.

create easter bunny

Go to Effect>warp, choose Arc Upper, raise the Bend into 22%, click OK. expand the shape by selecting Object>Expand appearance on the menu bar.

create easter bunny

Create Rounded Rectangle with W=0.2 inch, H=0.3 inch and white fill color for the teeth, duplicate it (alt+ shift drag), drag it to the right a little, and then with Pathfinder Intersect, cut the teeth to fit with basic mouth shape. removes the outline.create eater bunny

The tongue is created by making a circle W= 0.6 inch H= 0.6 inch, with pink linear gradient fill color, the light color (R 244, G 155, B 143) and dark color (R 227, G 111, B 126). Use Pathfinder Intersect to cut it into fitted shape. add a circle to the tongue with W=0.4 inch H=0.2 inch and solid pink fill color (R 244, G 155, B 143). Select basic mouth shape, copy and paste to back, choose the lower node and drag down a little. change the fill color into solid color (R 176, G 235, B 237).

create easter bunny

Add them to the eyes and nose, use Pen tool to create the shadow between the eyes with solid turquoise fill color (R 125, G 204, B 237), go to Arrange>send to back, and then group them. Place it on the upper egg crack.

Step 3 Creating Ears

create easter bunny

Create a circle with W= 1 inch H= 3 inch using the same gradation colors with the main base body. Select the node on the each side and then drag it, now we have the desire shape of the bunny’s ear, then copy and paste in front, and scale it to get the inner shape of the ear, fill it by using linear gradient tool, with light color (R 244, G 155, B 143) and dark color (R 227, G 111, B 126). Then, repeat the previous steps, copy, paste in front, and reduce the scale to be smaller than the inner ear, change it’s fill color into solid color (R 244, G 155, B 143).

create easter bunny

To create the shadow on the base ear, copy base shape and paste in front, change the color into solid color (R 69, G 122, B 224). Create a cross line, select both of the object and use Divide on the Pathfinder panel, so the object is cutt off but still in the same group, then ungroup the obejcts and delete the top side. Select all and group, then copy and reflect vertically by using the menu object > transform, drag it about 0.8 inch. Select and group each ear.

create easter bunny

Join both of the ears with the main body, Arrange > send to back.

Step 4 Creating Arms and Feet

create easter bunny

Let’s make the arms first, create a circle with this size W= 0.5 inch H=1.16 inch using the same gradient color as the body shape. Rotate it 45 degree by pressing the Shift button when rotating. Copy and paste in front, and change the color into lighter blue, the same color on center of main body, and reduce the size. Create the shadow on the base of the arms, just like how we did with the shadow on ear, by using the Divide on pathfinder. Select all, and copy and reflect vertically using menu Object > Transform, drag about 2.04 inch. Select and group each of arms.

create easter bunny

For the legs, create a circle with W= 1.07 inch and H=0.8 inch using the same previous blue color, and create a rectangle across the shape, then use Minus Front (Subtract) on pathfinder panel to cutt it off. Copy and paste it in front of the shape, and change the color into light blue, same as the center body shape color. Make a cross line, then use Divide on pathfinder panel to cut it off. Reduce the size. Create the shadow on the base of the foot, just like the steps when creating the shadow on the base of the ears and arms. Select all, then copy and reflect vertically using menu Object > Transform, drag it about 1.3 inch. Select and group each of foot.

create easter bunny

Join both arms and legs to the body, Arrange > send to back and tadaaa~ the eggbunny is done.

create easter bunny

But hey, let’s have some fun here. Since we divide the eggbunny bodies into several different part, let’s do a little experiment to put the face, ears, arms, foot, and even the egg cracks freely. It’ll gonna create several new characters. Now you can give it a shot and have some fun!

That’s a wrap everyone. If you have any questions regarding the tutorial, don’t hesitate to email us or ask via twitter or Facebook page. Happy Easter!.

How To Make Shrub or Tree Quickly with Adobe Illustrator

When drawing backgrounds, there’s a big chance that you have to draw leaves, brushes or trees. Creating the leaves manually will take too many time. We always searching a new way how to do draw as quickly as we can, and today we would like to share tips how to make shrubs pretty quick using Adobe Illustrator filters.

The Basic

Here’s I have 4 basic objects layered according to the color. It doesn’t looks like a shrub right now, too basic to called it as shrub. What we will do is add random details to the edge of the shrub with Filters. If you like you can make similar shapes as mine.

Making leaves quickly step 1

Randomness are awesome

Open up Appearance window. It will make you more easier to readjust/edit the filter in Appearance window.

I picked the base color object. To make the round object have random pointy edges, I added Filter > Distort & Transform > Roughen . Look at the setting on image below.

Making leaves quickly step 2

The next part is the shade color object. The pointy edges at the bottom is deliberately, to give the impression of random leaves. This time instead goes straight using Roughen filter, use Filter > Stylize > Round Corner will give subtle round corner to the sharp edges. Then you add the Roughen filter again. Notice that the impact of Round Corner Filter if you turned it off. The random shape on the edges are looks nicer with Round Corner effects turned on.

Then apply the same method to the highlight color object.

You can make a shadow too

You can use the same effect for the shadow under the shrub, to give impression there are grasses under the shrub.

Making leaves quickly for shadow

Use it on tree

Using the same method, you can create tree leaves, and you don’t have to pay an attention to fine details.

Making leaves quickly for tree

Make sophisticated grass

You also can make grasses from only a simple square objects. Below is the demonstration.

How to Make Pixel Mail Icon

In this tutorial, we will walk through on the making of 48×48 pixels mail icons using Adobe Photoshop. Working on small icons is about pixel precisions using vector layers and layer effects. Lets walk the talk, shall we…

Step 1, Create new document

Create new document, 48x48pixels, 72dpi.

Create New Document

Great! Looking at 100% view is too small, right? We always create new window and zoom the newly created window in 1200%. With this method, there’s no need to zoom in/out, save a lot of keystrokes and time. Your work window is the one with zoomed in, any changes on that window will also visible in 100% window.

New Window

Step 2, rectangles and Triangle

Select the Rectangle Vector shape, in Option bar, make sure your checked Snap to Pixels, to make the vector automatically snapped to pixel grids.

Snap to Pixel

Now new vector rectangle with width 40px and height 25px, choose any color, we won’t need it. The vector shape color will be replaced by Gradient layer effect described bellow.

Assign New Gradient Layer effect, use this settings and colors.

Gradient settings

After that, give the Stroke effect.

Storke effect

The next sub step is creating the folded triangle part on the bottom part of the Mail. Grab Pen Tool, create a rectangle like this.

Give the rectangle this layer effects.

Rectangle Effect Dropshadow

Rectangle effect Gradient

Rectangle effect innershadow

Step 3, Cut the rectangle

Right now it doesn’t looks like an envelope, lets cut up the rectangle with a custom shape. Select this custom shape layer. If you don’t see it, load it from custom shape presets, it’s included in standard Photoshop custom shapes.

Choose custome shape

Now draw the shape, before drawing pick subtract option first, we want to cut up the rectangle not adding new layer.

cut the rectangle by substract

We are almost completed the envelope.

Step 4, Finishing the envelope

Choose again previous custom shape, draw new shape behind the rectangle, match the width with the rectangle.

Grab Direct Selection Tool (White Arrow), select all these points then drag it to the bottom.

Dragging these points

Color it up by using these Layer Effects.

Inner Glow effect

Gradient Editor

Stroke settings

Now we have completed the envelope.

Step 5, Adding a sheet of paper

A mail is not complete without a written paper, no? Lets made it, this is the last step, i promise.

Create a new rectangular shape, put it between the outer and inner envelope. Give these layer settings.

Inner Shadow Settings

Inner Glow Settings

Gradient Editor Settings

Stroke Settings

Paper completed! Now, lets write some pixels. We will use the Pencil tool to write pixels, actually making some lines. Use this Pencil brush settings, and use #babec1 color. Create new layer, the write down you pixels.

Pencil Brush

Ours looks like this.

End result

There you go, creating small pixel Mail icons is easy, right? It’s just messing around with vector shapes, layer styles and brush settings.

How to Make Wine Glass With Adobe Illustrator

In this tutorial we will guide you how to make a wine glass using simple with Adobe Illustrator using several Filters and Appearance. This tutorial is suitable for beginner and intermediate.

Step 1 Starting Out

Create new document 500 x 500 pixels, with RGB color, and make sure “Align New Object to Pixel Grid” in Advance option is turned off.

Lets start with the top part of the glass first as starting point. Draw a cricle with width 180px, hieght 28px.

Step 2 Make the curves

Lets create the glass shape, Pen Tool to create the left side like the image below. Take your time until the shape looks like the example. Make sure the top point is snapped with the top part, and the lower point is at the align center of the top circle.

Step 3, Bottom Base

Create another circle for the bottom base, make it a bit bigger than top part circle. Placed the cicrcle under previous path you have created.

Step 4, Connect the Curve

Select the path from step 2, drag the path to the right while pressing Alt/Option key, it will duplicate the path. Then, Right click and choose Transform > Reflect, pick Vertical to mirror the path.

To connect the both path, choose again Pen Tool. Hover the pen tool on top of the toppest point on either path, the cursor will change into a pen with “slash” that’s mean you will select end of a path point. Click the point, and then pick the other point on the oposite path, when the cursor on top of the other point the cursor will change into a pen with little square, means you will connect two separate point.

Now, you have connected the top point.

Do the same method for the bottom part, the different is when you pick the second node, the cursor will change into a pen with a circle, its means you will closing the path.

We have finished joining two paths into one object.

Step 5, Another Circle

Create new smaller circle inside the top cricle, this circle will become the inner part of the glass.

Step 6, Shade it up

Before coloring, select the shape of the glass and the bigger circle on top, then Unite both objects (click the Unite button in Pathpinder palette).

The object’s use Radial Gradient like in the image bellow. Don’t worry about the bottom part looks white.

Now we will give the bottom part new shade, in Illustrator we can create many Fill or Stroke on a single object. Open up Appearence Editor, then click the New Fill button, create new gradient with these parameter.

Step 7, Shading the Inner of the Glass

Pick the small circle on top, then give it Liner gradient, apply color setting like the image bellow. I have mentioned above about multiple Fill or Stroke in one object, in this step we will add more than one stroke color and opacity.

Click the New Stroke button on Appeareance palette, apply the color and opacity just like the image below.

Step 8, Color the bottom part

Apply Radial Gradient, create color presets like image below.

Wineglass12 1

Step 9, Improve the base

The base is too flat, isn’t it? Lets improve by adding more beveled object.

Select the base circle, and than press Command/Control + C then Command/Control + B (a short for the pasted object will be placed under the copied object) move the circle 2 pixels down, give it white color. Then press again Command/Control + B, move it 4 or 5 pixels, give it liner gradient like the image bellow. Your result shoul be looks like the image below.

Step 10, Make it shiney

Lets make the glass shiney, create two shapes looks like this. And then applied these color presets to Linear Gradient.

Wineglass13 1

Assign Gaussian Blur effect to make the object less sharp. Give it Gussian Blur 2 pixels radius.

Step11, Add wine

Lets create the wine inside the glass. Draw a rectangular on top of the glass, give it any color you want. Then select the glass shape, and Copy then Paste in place.

With the pasted object selected, also select the rectangle. Go to Pathfinder pallete, and click the Intersect button.

The result should be looks like this.

Wineglass15 1

The glass supposed to be have tickness, to do that we will make the wine object smaller, so that it will be inside the glass. To do that, choose menu Filter > Path > Offset Path. Give the offset path negative value, it will make the object shrink, positive value makes the object grow. The result looks like this.

Step 11, Make it Red

Color up the wine with these Radial Gradient pressets.

Move the object into behind previous shiney object. Select the shiney objects, and change the mode to Overlay, it will make the shiney looks brighter.

The perpective of the wine is not right, we need make another circular shape to make impression the wine is inside the glass.

Create new circle on top of the wine, adjust the width to fit with the wine. Apply these color pressent on Linear Gradient.

Step 12, Create Some Bubbles

Create small circles in the center as the bubbles, will make the it looks nicer and not boring. Apple the Liner Gradient color presets as below, and then set the Tranparency mode to Overlay. Copy the bubles object and resize it, place them random.

Step13, More Shine!

Lets add more shine to the glass, use Pen tool to create these shapes. You can try different shapes if you want to improvise. Set the color to white, and reduce the opacity between 60%-80%.

Step14, Shadow

Now lets add shadow. Select the lowerst circle. Copy and then Paste it in place, give it Black color. Go to Filter > Gaussian Blur, set the Raidus to 6.0pixels. Set the opacity to 48% or less.

Congratulation you have created a wine glass.

Additional. Step 15, Give a Background

This is additional step, create the background using rectangle shape, then apply Linear gradient.

Final result.

Here’s the final result.

Coloring Gothic “Fallen Raven” with Adobe Photoshop

There are different variations of manga style. One of them is Gothic Manga. In Gothic Manga, the drawing style is still manga (Japanese comic style) but usually characters and backgrounds are in gothic theme. Gothic theme often depicted with mystery, darkness, death and wound. In this tutorial i will give you step-by-step drawing manga in gothic style.

Scan your drawing. Set 300 dpi grayscale when you’re scanning. Open your scanned image using Photoshop application, on menu image > mode choose RGB color . Then make new layer for basic color. Put basic color using paint bucket tool. Because we want a gothic feeling on the drawing, try to use the color Black, Red and White. You can also use another colors but remember to stay on the dark shades of colors instead of the bright ones 🙂 Look at pictures below for details.

Put strong shading on the image. Don’t forget to add black smokey eyes or black nail polish on the characters. Those will add the gothic feeling on your drawing.

Since my drawing is a fan-art, I put tattoos on my character . They refer to the real tattoo of Ville Vallo (the vocalist of HIM) . Look at picture below for details.

Then I add a dark cloud on the background to give gloomy effect on the drawing. Once again, you can use another color for your drawing just remember, psychedelic and monochrome aren’t really your best friends to create a gothic feeling.

Then you will need to flatten the image and use the .jpg type of it. You can do this in two ways (pick one) :

1. Go to Menu Layer > Flatten Image or;

2. Go To menu File > Save as .jpg

After that, open your .jpg type of file, now we will give some dramatic effect on the image. Go to Menu > Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow. Adjust the graininess, glow amount, clear amount until you’re satisfy with the result. This action will give a pale effect on the character, because as you know, pale characters look great in a gothic-themed image. Look at pictures below for details.

I also add photo filter “sepia”to give the picture a dramatic color effect. To do this, you can go to image > adjustment > Photo filter > choose the color “sepia”

After that, give a little ornament on the background to balance the composition. Choose an elegant and dark ornament to match the theme. In this image I use a Finland ornaments because it suits the character and the theme.

As a final touch, I select the outline and give it colors to match the skin color. Last , I go again to Menu > Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow and set the graininess, glow amount and clear amount. It’s done now!

Tracing Character Torako with Adobe Flash

Tracing an image using Adobe Flash is very simple. You only have to understand the basic characteristics in shaping lines on this application. In this tutorial I will show you step-by-step on how to trace a scanned image in Adobe Flash.

First, you need a sketch. You will have to scan the sketch to trace it in Adobe Flash. Here is my sketch. It’s a baby Tiger her name is Torako.

Then open Adobe Flash. to import your scanned image. You need to go to File > Import > Import to stage

The image will appear on the center of the stage. You can scale up or down the image if you want.

Next you need to make a new layer. This layer is for tracing the image. Don’t forget to lock the original layer (your image) by clicking the “padlock” button beside the “eye” button. If you need to rename the layer, “double click” the layer and name it as you like.

Use line tool to trace the image. Find the “line Tool” icon on your Flash Application. Look at the picture below for line Tool icon

Then, Select a color you like for tracing. I suggest bright colors because they’re bold and very helpful.

Before tracing a complex image, you need to know how to make basic lines in Flash.

Make a straight line: just “click” and “drag” your mouse to make a straight line

make a curved line: click “selection tool”, to make a curve you only need to move your pointer to the center of the line then “click” and “drag” it to direction you want. this action will make a curve from a straight line.

Editing nodes: to edit a node, you will need to “click” Subselection Tool, then “click” at the curve you made. The nodes then will appear. You can edit these nodes as you want.

Case sample: How to make a bow from this overlapping lines in 1 layer?

The answer is you have to make both lines (vertical and horizontal) in two different layers. Shape the horizontal line to become a bow using “selection tool”. “Right click” at the curved line and select “cut”. Go to layer where vertical line placed and at the empty stage “right click” and select “paste in place”. Now you have your bow shape.

note: if you make the vertical and horizontal lines in 1 layer, then use selection tool to make a curve directly on horizontal line, the vertical lines will act like a border to the horizontal line and prevent you to make a bow curve like this picture below,

Back to the image, now after you learn about basic lines in Flash, you are ready to trace your image. Using Line Tool, Make straight lines on your image in one new layer (look at step no.4) above. Look at the picture below for details

Shape the curves from those straight lines. Look at the picture below for details.

When you finished tracing the image, go to the layer your image placed and click the “eye” icon beside the padlock icon. The red “x” will appear and your scanned image now unseen.

Choose the outer outlines. To do this you need to hold shift button on your keyboard and click the outer outlines one by one (also click the outer lines of the eyes) after all lines selected, change outlines size to 3 points (go to properties panel, if the panel doesn’t appear, go to window > properties )

change the selected outer outlines color to black by clicking the color box on tool panel. Now we have a vector outlines and we’re ready to color it.

This file will have .fla extension when you save it. And it’s a vector file. If you need a bitmap file , you can go to File > Export > Export Image . You can choose any type of bitmap file as you want.
