Perspective Guide

Make the right perspective is always a struggle for every illustrator especially for newbie. There are various ways and tools to make perspective guide. In this article I will show you how to make perspective guide with Adobe Illustrator. The method is very simple and scalable.

Step 1, draw a line

First, draw a vertical line on left of the canvas, and then duplicate the vertical line and move the duplicate to the other side of the canvas. It’s important to align the lines, check the alignment before proceed to the next step.

Step 2, blend it

To make more lines in between both lines, use the Blend tool. Blend tool also available on menu Object > Blend > Make.

After Blend tool selected, click the left line and then right line. Probably you will see a shade of gray color on your screen now. Lets adjust the Blend Option, go to menu Object > Blend > Blend Option. Change the Blend option like the image below.

Step 3, vanishing point

Every perspective have a vanishing point. Right now our lines is just a bunch of vertical lines. Go to Effect > Warp > Arc Upper. Change the option to match the image below. Now, we have a vanishing point.

Step 4, horizon lines

Another part on perspective is a horizon lines. We will still using lines and blend tools, but it’s a weebit different way.

Create a horizontal lines at the bottom, create a second lines on top of the bottom lines. Match the width with the vanishing point lines. Create the thrid line, but this time the distance is shorter than the distance between from of the first line and second line. Create the fourth lines with shorter distance.

Choose Blend tool again, click line 1 to line 4. Change the Blend option to Specified steps 10. Feel free to as many steps you want. This is what my lines looks like.

That’s it! The basic perspective guide are done.  The vanishing and horizontal lines are scalable, view the video to see how scalable the lines are.

Step 6, change the vanishing point

If you want to move the vanishing point to left and right, use Effect > Distort  &  Transform > Free Distort.

If you ever wanted to make another vanishing point, just duplicate it, and change the Free Distort option. Dowload the Adobe Illustrator CS3 and CS4.
