Mascot Mozilla Indonesia Community Design Process9

It’s a blast, fast and flexible it’s also orange which is our favorite color. That’s Firefox, one of the best of internet browser in the world. We are very thrilled when Viking Karwur, the person behind Mozilla Indonesia Communities contacted us to work on Indonesia Firefox Mascot. And, here are the process.

Hunting for good concept

Indonesia is a country with thousands of cultures and islands. It’s very hard to find a good memorable symbol for the mascot from hundreds of Indonesia customs.

The most well known symbol of Indonesia is Wayang (Screen Puppet) from Eastern Java. After working on few rough sketches, it’s very hard to transform the puppet into adorable Firefox mascot.

We also look for some inspirations from other communities. You probably have seen Fokeh, Firefox mascot from Japan.

After the first failure, we look for other famous alternative. After a bit of chit chat and Google search. We decided to go with Balinese Kecak Dancer. Balinese Kecak Dance is one of must watch event if you visit Bali. Also the Kecak Dancer is a group of male dancers about 50 males wearing only a loin cloth with bare upper–part body.

Firefox log has fire tail, we think its important to incorporated the fire tail into our the design with Indonesia twist. We think Cirebon batik pattern is looks like a fire, although it’s originated as clouds.

Sketches

The whole process was executed by Poy. After the concept approved, Poy start sketching directly with Photoshop. She produced these sketches. We discussed which one is the best as the initial pose with Viking Karwur. We agreed on the sitting pose.

Coloring

We think that firefox must have flashy colors. So, the colors is quite glossy. The overall coloring process are using Adobe Illustrator, also done by Poy.
